The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) is the statutory body responsible for regulating the practice of engineering in Nigeria. For engineering consultancy firms, COREN registration is not optional — it is a legal requirement under the Engineers (Registration, etc.) Act.
Firm-level COREN registration goes beyond having individual engineers with practising licences. To qualify, a consulting engineering firm must demonstrate that registered engineers hold at least 55% of the company's shares, that the firm has a verifiable track record of consultancy engagements, and that it maintains adequate professional indemnity arrangements.
Registration is subject to a five-year renewal cycle, during which COREN verifies that the firm continues to meet the registration criteria. This includes confirming that the firm's practising engineers have maintained their individual COREN licences through the required Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities.
